week 06: video essays

What is a video essay?

A video essay is a piece of video content that, much like a written essay, advances an argument. Video essays take advantage of the structure and language of film to advance their arguments. [wikipedia]

In simple words, they are essays in video form. Like any other written essay, they analyse a topic, person, thesis etc. using visuals and narrative .

Modes of video essays

1. Poetic mode

2. Expository mode

3. Participatory mode

4. Observational mode

5. Reflexive mode

6. Performative mode

Western influence on K-pop

I watched various Visual essays talking about topics related to what I intend on making my visual essay.

Comparing them to the type of visual essays I know of, I believe they were all Expository in nature. There were visuals relating to what was being said and the commentary was the most important part.

I think watching these visual essays helped me understand their structure, and how editors organise their information for it to be easily understandable and have a proper flow. As I watched some short and longer visual essays, I also learnt how much I could elaborate on each topic based on how long the video is.

THE EXPOSITORY MODE

-Stitching together other video clips

-Extract a keyword from each paragraph and attach a video clip related to the keyword
